TL;DR: malicious CAD files in one paragraph
CAD applications parse dozens of formats (DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, embedded images) and run scripts and plugins. Bugs in that parsing code let a crafted file run code on the engineer's machine the moment it is opened, with no macro warning. In 2026 Autodesk fixed a DXF heap overflow (CVE-2026-16463) affecting AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG TrueView and the vertical products, BMP and TIF flaws in Revit and AutoCAD (CVE-2026-7406 and CVE-2026-7405), and a local privilege flaw in its installer. Patch quickly, treat files from outside like executable code, lock down AutoLISP loading, take local admin rights away, and protect the files themselves so that a compromised workstation does not mean stolen designs.
Keep your designs locked, even on a compromised machine. CADChain's BORIS plugins for SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor and Blender encrypt and certify CAD files inside the tools your engineers already use, control who can open each file, and keep a tamper-proof record of every version and every access.
